“Krakatoa, the Last Days”, a Reflection of Learning to Nature


Have you ever got any signs of nature? Do you think that nature gives message about something? Yeah, nature will say something by its phenomena. Well, I watched a movie about it.

Title : Krakatoa the Last Day

This movie tells about Mount Krakatau that exploded in August, 1883 in Pesisir Pantai Ketimbang, Java. Before that explosion, there was a story about a geology scientist of Dutch who became the witness of this big disaster it.

Actually, these signs have been felt by the wife of a Dutch colonist leader, namely Williem Beyerink. Johanna, his wife, felt that there will be something wrong happen in the mount some months before. She was really afraid of small earthquakes happened, but the biggest anxiety was the strange events occurred around her environment. It can be the birds that left their nests; there were no hens that produce eggs; and the cows that cannot eat well as commonly. Those were told to his husband, but he seems never took care of it. He looks just interested in his big business and his money.

Let’s move to the scientist, he lived 100 miles away of the mount. He has ever seen and known a little information of volcano’s activity of Krakatoa from Schuit’s family. He still thinks that the mount is not too dangerous so far. Furthermore, he and his friend, Schuurman, knew more about the mount. His friend told about what happened in the past with the Krakatoa and relates it with what will happen later. She predicted that may be there will be a big explosion of Krakatoa. Later, he regretted his late thinking for analyzing the big mystery. He underestimated the story of local society.

On the other hand, the leader of colonist had a clerk who was loyal to him, is called Tokaya. That servant believed in what his leader’s wife statement, but he tried to ignore it. At night, there was wayang golek performance, which told about the Krakatoa’s explosion happened before. Then, the monster came a day after it. It began with an earthquake when Williem and his servant were in the market near to the beach. There was a big tsunami after it. Fortunately, his family saved. Then, when the water decreased, they moved to the hills. They arrived after one day, and they took a rest in a hunt for some minutes. Immediately, there was a sound like thunder arose and it was followed by a dark black fog. However, they can save their life, but they lost a baby.

So, I get the moral value of this movie. It is a long journey for knowing that we have to learn and understand the nature. You should never ignore it and deny the truth of people who you look in lower status than you. Even you look them as uneducated people, poor people, or whatever. Still, you should believe what wife’s feeling which sometimes has strong feeling. Let’s learn from nature.
